I appreciate abstract art and the challenge that comes with that (it's like a puzzle that may take me a few visits before I start to get it). Lolette Kuby's book of poetry, Inwit, was such an experience for me. I felt slightly stupid admitting that ?I didn?t get it? after my first few pages. From the beginning of the book, the author is pretty much arguing with herself about the true meaning of poetry, and I said to myself?(with whom I had just shared a similar quarrel)?"Now, here is someone who cares very deeply about the art of poetry, so seriously that she is willing to pick it apart and then spell it all out for her audience to see."
Fantastic Realities
Do these timeless fables we all know and love have underlying meanings that can be applied to our day and age? Do I still want to believe in this fairy-tale romance or am I just trying to escape the grim reality? I?m not trying to rebel against tradition, but what choice do I have when the alternative is to wait on an ancient myth that may not exist anymore? I found myself questioning love and my perception of it, having read a copy of Kenneth Pobo?s book, Introductions.
With a title like Life, a reader can expect universal themes put in the simplest of heartfelt terms. That?s what you get from Cornell Wesley?his point of view on the things we all understand. He doesn?t bother with poem titles, opting to speak through a progression of numbered psalms. It provides almost a timeline of events throughout one?s life?a series of ideas, opinions, and subject matters that make up one person?s mindset. Wesley darts in and out of rhyme, adding to the various ways he expresses himself and giving the reader an insight into his true feelings.
We know that the pen is, in fact, mightier than the sword -- and with both CD and book in her work, She of the Dreaming Sky, Diane Randall brings a new question of: ?is the voice mightier than the pen?? I wondered if there would be a palpable difference between reading the poems and hearing them being spoken? Of course there would be (certain things have to be said, and others have to be read) but that doesn?t make one better than the other. Me? I opted for the CD (but that?s just my ongoing battle with ADD), only to find that the order of the tracks was not in sequence with how they are in the book. Magnificently brilliant, I say, because I began to read the book first, absorb it, then go back and re-read it with the audio playing. Best of both worlds?
